We got a great deal on a hotel in California for two nights during the holiday weekend. Our total ended up being less than $150. We had all the amenities we desired, including a microwave and small fridge that I needed to store baby's milk. We also had complimentary WiFi, a free hot breakfast buffet each morning, and free parking (a consideration in California!) How did we do it?

Our last minute family weekend getaway for under $500 - Part I: The decision
After going back and forth for several weeks about a getaway for the long July 4th weekend, we decided not to go for a number of reasons: we're trying to keep our costs low so that I can work as little as possible, too many travelers out during the same weekend, and so on.
My husband, on the other hand, sent me a message from work on Friday morning, July 1st asking me to reconsider getting away for the weekend. I promptly reminded him of the many reasons we had previously decided not to go and besides, this is the last possible minute to plan this--with two very young kids no less!
